Fort Knox Legend 7251 Gun Safe

The Legend 7251 gun safe from Fort Knox is the largest model of the series. The Legend Series is the legend gun safetop of the line offering from Fort Knox Safe and it stands up to its billing. This is one special gun safe. It is not perfect, but it is very close for a residential gun safe.

The Legend 7251 is very large, at 51 inches wide. This width translates into a gun capacity of as much as 68 guns, depending upon your internal configuration decisions and the type of weapons you have. Either way, you should have a lot of room to work out your storage needs.

    Key Advantages:

    1. Steel: The 7251 has 7 gauge steel body container. There are some others that have the same, but very few that can say they have more. The Legend series is also one of the few gun safes that have a steel liner, in this case it is a 10 gauge steel line. This safe does not scrimp on steel.
    2. Locking Bolts: Less is not more on this safe. There are 28 locking bolts around all four door sides. Each bolt is 1.5 inches thick. Also, each corner of the door has a diagonal star shaped corner bolt. These corner bolts are great for adding rigidity and strength to the most common area attacked by thieves.
    3. Weight: This safe weighs a ton, literally. Actually, it weighs more than a ton, at 2,176 pounds. I am a bit of a weight snob and always point out how light some safes are. Not this one. You’d better be damn certain about where you want this safe placed, because it would be more than a little difficult to move.

    Key Disadvantages:

    1. Biometric Lock: This safe comes with a biometric lock. Several experts I have spoken with are not quite ready to trust a biometric lock on a larger safe. Even though there are some good ones, reliability is still not as good as combination or even an electronic lock. I would spring for a different lock.
    2. Weight: I know, I just got done saying how awesome the weight of this safe is. I only caution you here because you need to make sure the floor where you put this can hold the weight. Also, if you think you are getting transferred soon, maybe wait to buy the safe for your new place.
    3. Dealer Network: Fort Knox safes are not inexpensive and the dealer network is very widespread. Competitive pricing is also very difficult to determine. In fact, at least one dealer has reported that it lost its dealership because it posted Fort Knox pricing online. You will need to decide if the service and buying experience can stand up to the quality of this safe.

    Fit and Finish

The Legend Series has the same 14 glossy colors and 4 textured colors that can be found on most of its other safes. If you like painted murals, like game pictures, on your safe, you will have to commission your own artist.

There are three different interior configurations that offer between 18 and 68 long gun storage.

    Bottom Line

I will give credit where credit is due. This is one of the best premium safe offerings in the business. I do not like the dealer network sales and service model, as detailed above. However, if you are near a dealer you are comfortable with, then don’t let this stop you.
